Taboo Materials

ho

Today’s context is urging us to get on with new, hitherto inconceivable uses in materials. Are we prepared to put our prejudices aside for the sake of sustainability?

What if bricks made from human excrement provided better thermal insulation than common bricks? Are we prepared to insulate our homes with chicken feathers in the future? Or for our cars to run on fuel made from urine?

Right from the origins of humanity, waste has formed part of new opportunities that have been discovered or developed either by chance or intentionally. Today’s context, with a planet on the brink of collapse and a scientific revolution that kicked off centuries ago, is urging us to get on with new, hitherto inconceivable uses in materials. Are we prepared to put our prejudices aside for the sake of sustainability? Scientists and engineers are already doing it. Now we need creatives, experts in advertising and marketing, to bring these “taboo materials” to industry and to the consumers.

This workshop will be conducted by Robert Thompson, Materfad scientific director, in the frame of the ADCE European Creativity Festival 2019, an immersive annual event bringing together creative professionals from around the continent for two days of inspirational talks, hands-on workshops, and plenty of networking opportunities. This year’s theme will be celebrating the people who are already building a better tomorrow. People who employ their creativity for good, who believe tomorrow’s problems will not exist if we start today.
