(mis)using what is there

Balancing between hand craft and technology, Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler design objects, alternative production methods, interactive installations and more, with a focus on experiments and conceptual thinking within a given context.
Katharina Mischer will talk about the studio’s approach and what “being open or openness” means personally to them by explaining several of their projects. Varying between collaborative methods, cherishing external inputs or highlighting the importance of passing knowledge, the shown projects will visualise that design can deal about topics rather than single objects.

Mischer’traxler is the studio founded by Katharina Mischer and Thomas Traxler in Vienna in 2009, after they graduated from the IM Masters department at the Design Academy Eindhoven and several years of collaboration.

Their projects are shown in many international exhibitions and are in the permanent collections including museums such as the Art Institute Chicago, Vitra Design Musem and the MAK in Vienna. Their work has won several awards, including the Wu Guanzhong Art & Science Innovation Award 2012 and the Austrian Experimental Design Award 2009. As a studio, mischer’traxler were honoured with the Designer of the Future Award by Design Miami/Basel in 2011 and in April 2014 they were won the Be-open Young Talent award.
