Current functional and smart yarns, and existing developments on the miniaturization of electronics open up the possibility to rethink what textiles could become and its future uses. Functional textiles currently already take up to 40% of the textile production in Europe and prospectively are increasing. Moreover are starting to permeate other uses than geotextiels, architextiles and agritextiles. We already see functional textiles in professional clothing, sports and health related applications. What will be next? What functionalities clothing will have in the future? What will be their impact in fashion? How will they transform the wearable tech scene? No one knows yet. However, in order for it to happen it requires a big transformation reaching multiple disciplines and levels: Innovation should happen in production, design and business models that need to change.

Some topics to be addressed:

  • Wearables (or tech garments) can’t be produced with existing machines in meters and standardized sizes. It is required to be tailored to the person. This allows for personalization on material, product and behavior levels.
  • The development of relevant, robust and producible concepts for innovative garments asks for collaboration between disciplines. We have to shift from vertical to horizontal relations, in order to create sub-products. To motivate conventional companies towards change and collaboration we need to be able to share expertise and expectations from bottom up: What are you able to do and what is needed to link this to this other companies expertise? From design with a keen focus on societal relevance, towards development, producibility and deployment locally, or the other way around.
  • Current business models based on low cost mass production can’t be applied to them. The benefits need to be shared between the collaborators. For this we are in need of a trust models, which could be easier, achieved when approached locally. There is no existing market of distribution channel for wearables yet. Wearables require continuous maintenance, so we have to develop service models for them.

The Dutch embassy in Spain is organizing in collaboration with ADI-FAD, Eindhoven University of Technology (The Netherlands) and Eurecat (Spain) an event where best practices from the Netherlands and Spain will be presented. We hope this will act as a start for a debate on what are the drivers and showstoppers acting in favour and against the rebirth of the textile industry in Europe are.

Marina Toeters, fashion design, by-wire.net (NL)

Operates on the cutting edge of technology and fashion design. Through her business by-wire.net she stimulates collaboration between the fashion industry and technicians for a relevant fashion system and supportive garments for everyday use. She designs prototypes of wearables for, amongst others, Philips Research and the European Space Agency on product development. As a teacher, coach and researcher, she works for the fashion department in the Utrecht school of Arts, textile department at Saxion University for applied science and industrial design faculty in Eindhoven University of Technology.

 

José Teunissen, fashion research, ArtEZ (NL) more information

Since 1 January 2016 José Teunissen is Dean of School of Fashion Design and Technology at Londons College of Fashion in London. She holds a Visiting Professorship of Fashion Theory and Research at ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Arnhem, The Netherlands and works as an independent Fashion curator. She is currently a board member of Dutch Creative Industries Council. She is also chair of the network CLICK/Next Fashion the governmental innovation network for the creative industries. In 2015 she realised the Center of Expertise Future Makers dedicated to new making processes in Fashion and Design. She is one of the partners in the research project Crafting Wearables.

Mr. Koen van Os, smart textiles research, Philips Research (NL) more information

Received his master in precision engineering in 1995 from Eindhoven University of Technology. After his graduation he fulfilled positions at Stork Digital Imaging and joined Philips in 2001. Here he started as technologist in the field of electronic interconnection technologies. Later he was engineering manager at Philips Lumalive for developing LED textiles in wearable applications. Since 2010 he explores electronic textiles at Philips Research. He is responsible for product and process developments with a strong focus on industrialization by bridging the gap between electronic and textile industries and is project coordinator of PLACE-it. The PLACE-it (finished in January 2014) project investigated Large Area Conformable Electronics by InTegration. The project has demonstrated added value in a broad domain: from health care to automotive. Since 2015 actively involved in digital fabrication of products. Focusing on 3D printing and other digital tools based on experiences gathered at the FabLab Academy (by MIT).

Saúl Baeza, product & wearable design, HUNCH  (ESP) more information

Is Cofounder of HUNCH Office, a design and experimentation studio set in Barcelona and working worldwide that combines the creation of fashion collections with material investigation work and projects in design, art direction, research and consulting services. HUNCH is also developing a new material made of sheep wool fibres, with the collaboration of Materfad (Barcelona Materials Center).

 

Miquel Rey, Business Innovation, EURECAT (ESP) more information

Graduate and MBA from ESADE Business School, specialized in global marketing with semesters at the University of Michigan (USA) and Univerität zu Köln (Germany) after a brief step by Deloitte (97-99), is incorporated into Indústries Murtra SA, a catalan textile multinational, developing his career in marketing, product innovation, commercial and management of talent coming to be the Director responsible for these areas (99-2011). In 2011 decided to make the leap to public service as President of the Tecnocampus and responsible for economic promotion of Mataró (11-Oct15). As President of CETEMMSA (Jul13-Apr15) works to positionate further and internationally the technological center in enterprises, and co-lead the draft terms of merger of centers Tecnio that have become Eurecat, of which he is now CEO of Business.

Miquel Soler Luque, functional textile research, CRTTT (ESP) more information

Technical engineer of knitted fabrics by the Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica en Tejidos de Punto de Canet de Mar – UPC. In the period 1986 to 1990 was the head of production and manufacture en Rosa Luque Masvidal, S.L., a company dedicated to the manufacture of high quality socks. Since the year 1989 to 1990 worked in Ecar, S.L., a reparing company of textile machinery, where collaborated in the mounting of and preparation of machines  from Colosio and Matec. The year 1990 begins, until the year 2011, as a teacher and head of the technology department and director at Escuela Universitaria de Ingeniería Técnica en Tejidos de Punto de Canet de Mar, EUETTP. In the year 2008 happens to be the director of the Center for Research and transfer of technology textile,  Escuela de Tejidos de Canet de Mar (CRTTT).

Oscar Tomico is an assistant professor of the Designing Quality in Interaction Research Group, and part of Wearable Senses at Eindhoven University of Technology. Current projects focus on the textile industry and involve stakeholders during the design process to foster cooperation to frame the design space, collaboration space and reformulate the design opportunity. He is project leader of Smart Textile Services (CRISP 2011), a partner in Crafting Wearables (CLICKNL 2013) and ArcInTexETN (H2020 2015). He co-organized events like (Wearable) Tech meets Design (Eindhoven, 2015), Careful Designs and Hypercrafting Fashion (Amsterdam, 2012 to 2014), and Crafting Wearables breakout (MoBA, Arnhem, 2013).
